How to get into top US Business Schools

Getting into the top business schools in India or abroad is a dream for lakhs of students each year. While so many aspire to get into the best business schools, only a few make it. So, what does it take to get into the top MBA programs? How can you put together an exceptional application? Knowing the answers to these questions can give your MBA application an edge.

GPA

While your GPA and GMAT/GRE scores don’t entirely determine the result of your MBA application, they play a vital role in the evaluation process. Universities are interested to know how one has performed in school or college, in their respective education systems. The academic performance of the past helps colleges understand which subject modules you are most interested in and have the potential of excelling in. MBA programs around the world are rigorous, and your academic performance in the past acts as an indicator of your good academic performance in the future.

Standardized Test Scores

GPAs vary across different boards, and so make it difficult for colleges to compare the performance of one candidate with that of another. Therefore, to obtain a neutral piece of information about the student, the standardized test score, i.e. GMAT/GRE Scores, are very important. The GMAT/GRE score is accepted to be the most reliable indicator of a candidate’s capability. A good GMAT/GRE score also helps you to get good scholarships.

Recommendation Letters

Colleges have a holistic process to evaluate applicants. They seek to understand the all-round development of the student and not solely rely on grades and test scores. One way to understand this is by reading recommendation letters from professional supervisors. An excellent recommendation letter should speak about your personal qualities, and support this by citing examples from the workplace.

Strong Essays

A well-written essay is a means to convince the admission committee of your capabilities and goals. Unlike Masters applications, MBA applications require you to write essays in response to various questions put forth by the admissions committee. The best essays are authentic and display high levels of self-awareness. Schools look for evidence of leadership, teamwork, and excellent accomplishments in addition to goal clarity.

Extracurricular Activities

MBA colleges are very interested in the extracurricular/co-curricular/out-of-workplace activities that a student engages in. While several extracurricular activities are very common, universities look for the link between academics and extracurriculars.
